A Guide On MC Licences

Posted on

If you desire to drive large trucks such as road trains or B-doubles in Australia, you will need a multi-combination (MC) licence. The licence is the highest driving licence you can acquire in Australia. As such, you can drive all categories of vehicles with this licence. Most drivers do not know how to acquire this licence. Below is an extract with intricate details of applying for the MC licence.

Eligibility

Your immediate concern would be whether you qualify to apply for the MC licence. As a rule, applicants should have held the Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination (HC) licence for at least one year. This way, they understand the basics of truck operation, the highway code, and the various trucking regulations. Applicants must also undergo an eyesight test to ensure they do not have blurred vision or visual conditions that could affect their driving. Further, you will undertake a medical test to determine whether you have medical conditions that could affect your judgement or driving skills. For instance, some illnesses such as vertigo and dizziness could impair your driving.

Training

You need to enrol in a registered training organisation (RTO) to undertake your MC training. While most RTOs offer quality services, it would be wise to conduct background research to determine which RTO best serves your needs. For instance, how long does it take to receive your MC licence? Does the RTO allow you to be trained in the truck of your choice? Are you inclined towards working with a specific trainer? For instance, it could be the trainer is a reputable truck driver.

The RTO requires you to fill out some documentation before you can commence classes. For instance, you must fill out practical driving assessment and camera acknowledgement forms and verify your identity. Besides, you need to pay a training fee.

MC licence training comprises practical and theory lessons. Typically, the primary purpose of the driver training is to ensure you understand the safety standards to observe when driving an MC truck. Therefore, your trainer will show you how to identify blind spots, turn the truck in tight spaces and observe weight limits. Once you are competent, you will undertake your practical driving assessment. Usually, the PDA is recorded on cameras to ensure transparency. You do not have to worry about the in-cabin cameras since you can view the footage if you wish. If you pass the PDA, you receive your MC licence.
